We follow all federal guidelines as outlined by the U.S. Department of Transportation (49 CFR Part 40, Subpart O) to ensure full compliance with DOT regulations. Here's what you can expect:
Step 1: Initial Contact
You reach out to begin the SAP process after a DOT drug or alcohol violation is reported to the Clearinghouse. We’ll answer any questions you have and explain what’s required to return to a safety-sensitive position.
Step 2: SAP Evaluation
You’ll complete a face-to-face or virtual clinical evaluation with a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). During this meeting, we gather background information, discuss the violation, and assess your overall situation using industry-standard tools, including the ASAM criteria.
Step 3: Treatment/Education Recommendation
Following the evaluation, the SAP will recommend a specific course of education and/or treatment that must be completed. This recommendation is tailored to your individual needs and is required for DOT compliance.
Step 4: Referral to Services
You’ll be referred to a qualified treatment or education provider. We help connect you with trusted resources that meet both DOT standards and your personal circumstances (e.g., schedule, location, and affordability).
Step 5: Program Completion
You’ll complete the full treatment or education program as recommended. The provider will communicate progress to the SAP as needed.
Step 6: Follow-Up SAP Evaluation
After you’ve finished the program, you’ll return for a second SAP evaluation. This follow-up determines if you’ve successfully complied with the SAP’s recommendations and are now eligible to begin the return-to-duty testing process.
Step 7: Return-to-Duty Test
Once the SAP determines you are eligible, your employer (or prospective employer) will be notified through the DOT Clearinghouse. You’ll then take a DOT return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test.
✅ Passing this test is required before resuming safety-sensitive duties.
Step 8: Follow-Up Testing Plan
The SAP will develop a Follow-Up Testing Plan, which includes unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests over a designated period. Your employer is responsible for ensuring this plan is carried out.
This entire process is designed to promote public safety while also supporting your successful return to work. We’re here to guide you with care, professionalism, and a clear path forward.
