A DOT SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) Evaluation is a required step for individuals who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations. With C.L.E.A.R.S. this process includes an initial face-to-face clinical evaluation, a personalized treatment or education recommendation (if needed), and a follow-up evaluation to determine readiness to return to safety-sensitive duties. All steps are conducted in compliance with federal DOT guidelines and are designed to support a safe, responsible return to work.
These evaluations are for individuals working in safety-sensitive positions regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT), including commercial truck and bus drivers, airline personnel, railroad workers, pipeline employees, maritime operators, and transit workers. Employers in these industries are also required to ensure their staff meet DOT drug and alcohol compliance standards following a violation.
Whether you're a CDL holder, aviation crew member, railroad employee, pipeline technician, merchant mariner, or any other DOT-regulated worker, our SAP services are here to guide you through the return-to-duty process. We provide professional, judgment-free support every step of the way to help you get back to work—safely, confidently, and in full compliance.
At C.L.E.A.R.S., our Substance Abuse Assessments are designed to provide a clear, detailed understanding of an individual’s relationship with substance use. We use a comprehensive ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) assessment, which is a nationally recognized, evidence-based tool that looks at multiple areas of a person's life—not just substance use, but also medical history, mental health, social environment, readiness to change, and more.
This holistic approach helps us determine the most appropriate level of care or support needed, whether that’s education, outpatient counseling, or a higher level of treatment. The goal is not just compliance—but real, meaningful insight that supports long-term recovery and personal growth. Our assessments are conducted in a professional, respectful, and confidential setting, with no judgment—only support.
Once the assessment is complete, we help connect individuals to the most appropriate treatment or education program based on their specific needs and DOT requirements. At C.L.E.A.R.S., referrals are never one-size-fits-all—we use the results of the ASAM assessment to determine the level of care that's right for you, whether that’s a brief educational program, outpatient counseling, or more structured treatment services.
We work with trusted, qualified providers and take into account important factors like location, scheduling, and cultural fit to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible. Our goal is to make sure you’re connected with resources that not only meet compliance standards—but truly support your success and well-being. Every referral is made with your future in mind.
At C.L.E.A.R.S., support doesn’t stop after the evaluation or referral—we stay with you through the entire process to make sure you meet every DOT requirement with confidence. Our Support Services are designed to guide you step-by-step so nothing feels confusing or overwhelming.
Follow-Up Process
After you’ve completed the recommended treatment or education program, we’ll schedule a follow-up evaluation to assess your progress and readiness to return to safety-sensitive work. This follow-up is a critical part of the DOT compliance process and ensures that all requirements have been met. We’ll also review any ongoing support or monitoring that may be required, depending on your situation.
Return-to-Duty Process
Once the SAP has determined you're eligible, you’ll receive a Return-to-Duty Report, which is shared with your employer (or prospective employer) through the DOT Clearinghouse. From there, you're cleared to take a return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test. We’re here to help coordinate with employers and provide guidance throughout this phase, ensuring a smooth transition back to work—safely, legally, and with a renewed sense of purpose.
